My twitter timeline is currently full with all things AI. Workflows with Claude Code, peopel sharing what and how to use it. How well it’s going. Every day there’s another article to read, video to watch, and tip to try out. And I’m all in on it: coding with AI until late at night, being excited about its capabilities, tbh it’s a bit overwhelming. Recently I also found a few more critical views/perspectives on it, and I’d like to share them too. It’s too easy to just follow the hype and not question what is happening right now so I also want to share those views. I also already thought about putting together a list of worthwhile articles to read to learn how to have success with using AI, but apparently this article comes first.

Why I Don’t Ride the AI Hype Train - Mert Bulan raises concerns about AI’s problematic data collection practices, unsustainable energy costs, and limited practical utility. He argues that current AI tools are overhyped and potentially dangerous technologies being marketed as revolutionary when they’re simply tools that should be used cautiously.

Coding with AI - Alberto Fortin shares his experience with AI coding tools, noting that while they can be helpful, they often produce inconsistent and poorly structured code. He advocates for using AI as a supportive assistant rather than a primary coding method, emphasizing the importance of maintaining human expertise and critical thinking in software development.

To Gen or Not To Gen - GenAI Ethics (PDF, German) - Johannes Link’s presentation slides (in German) for Entwicklertag Karlsruhe exploring the ethical considerations of generative AI. (I just realised, I was that day in Karlsruhe, but for another event.)

These perspectives have definitely made me more thoughtful about how I use AI tools. I hope I stay grounded and we’ll see where it all goes.
